Different types of wireless security system

Most of times we use wireless system for internet access. Since the channel is wireless, it cannot be protected physically. There are several techniques for wireless protection. Here in this article I am trying to explain the features and importance of common wireless protection technique. Let's start with the most common wireless protection system.

WPA&WPA2 Personal
  • Acronym for WiFi protected Access and WiFi protected Access II.
  • Based on Pre-shared keys
  • Excellent to use in home and small office networks
  • The network traffic is encrypted using 256 bit key
  • The key may be a string 64 hexadecimal digit or as passphrase of 8 to 63 ASCII character
Dynamic WEP
  • Acronym for Wired Equivalent Privacy
  • Based on a easily breakable algorithm
  • Widely used in early period for IEEE 802.11 Security
LEAP
  • Acronym for Light weight Extensible Authentication Protocol
  • Based on WEP
  • Important feature is that Dynamic WEP
  • Dynamic WEP means the client need to re-authenticate with the server as the time moves on
  • On each successful re-authentication, a new key will be generated and it will be used for future purpose.
These are the important types of authentication protocols for wireless networks.

Please comment, if you have more details. Remember, knowledge increases when shared!!
